Overview and Credits. Winter quarter we will explore themes relevant to creating and managing small businesses and nonprofits. These will include organizational forms, marketing, operations, organizational development, ethics, globalization, finance, and leadership. A 12-credit option is available; as with fall quarter, omit the final project.

Assignments. 1. "Dot-Bomb." Each student will select a failed "dot-com" and write a 2-3 page paper in which you summarize its products and history and briefly analyze the reasons for its failure. Due January 17th.
2. Each student will interview 3 business-owners or nonprofits about their business form and its success. Complete a two-page paper describing what you found. Due February 5th.
3. Working in teams, students will complete a two-page, single-spaced, grant application. Details on this assignment will be provided in class. Due January 30st.
4. Globalization assignment-done in small groups. Due February 14th. More details will be provided in a handout.
5. Cases, done in teams: marketing (due January 24th); nonprofit management (due February 7th); and organizational development (due February 28th).
6. The final paper, to be completed by small teams, will be an organizational analysis of a firm or nonprofit organization. This will include a history of the firm, an analysis of its products or services, its strategy, markets and financial condition, major competitors, and its overall management. Due March 12th.
7. Seminar papers will be due on the readings on Thursday of weeks 1 and 7.
