Final Review Questions
Thursday Nov 29th , there will be a final exam on both the
economics and the ecology topics covered this quarter. In addition to reviewing
the study questions and midterm review, you should be familiar with the
following questions/concepts.

Name the five major Pacific Salmon and give a generalized life cycle for
them.

What species of salmon did we observe in Kennedy Creek? Why are they doing
so well when many salmon runs are endangered?

Discuss various strategies used by the salmon in Kennedy Creek to maximize
genetic diversity.

Give three different examples of how fires impact ecosystems.

Briefly describe three different examples of how topography influences
plant communities. Be specific.

How were the Olympic mountains formed?

Be prepared to identify all the species on the plant list except for Trametes
versicolor.

What is the most important principle to consider when applying sustainable
forestry techniques to a particular forest? Briefly explain why.

How did the Native Americans manage the prairies in the southern Puget
Sound? Why did they do this?

Excluding fire, list and briefly discuss three different sources of disturbances
and how they influence the forest. After they have occurred, what clues
might you find in the forest to determine which one happened?

The species distribution for two species, A & B was investigated by
scoring data from a number of plots. The contingency table is given below
and the chi square was calculated to be 8.64. Is there a relationship between
these two plants? What is it and what is a possible explanation for it?

Parking is a big problem at Evergreen and it will only get worse after
the new Seminar II building. One of the possible solutions is to build
a new parking lot on the field and forest immediately north of the Library
building. You are in charge of coordinating a cost/benefit analysis for
this proposal. List all of the costs and benefits that you would need to
calculate (you don’t need to know how they would be calculated).
