Trees, Timber, and Trade Lab Note Book Fall 2001

Below are the minimum requirements for recording observations in your lab book. Please include as many additional observations as you wish. Your lab notebook should contain labeled gross morphological sketches of at least two specimens from the following groups: Fungi, Lichens, Liverworts, Mosses, Ferns, Gymnosperms, Angiosperms, Grasses, Sedges, Rushes, Spruces, Pines, and Firs. Please remember that all lab books must be turned in complete before the final laboratory practical examination.

Keeping the lab note book

The first 2-3 pages of your lab book should be the table of contents which lists the scientific names of all the observed plants and the page number of the drawings and observations. Every page should have the name of the organism, date, location, and other collection information at the top of the page. Use the entire page for each drawing. Don't make teeny-tiny, itty-bitty drawings. Draw what you see. Clean, simple lines are best for your drawings. Draw an overall outline of the plant if appropriate and then details of leaves, branching patterns, cones, seeds, other reproductive structures. Don't forget to label all the anatomical structures and include scale bars in mm (or cm). Record your observations in pencil. Use colored pencils for drawing if appropriate. Also, record your observations of plant associations. You will be provided with a list of the taxa that you should be able to identify without referring to a book by the end of Fall Quarter.

Yes, you do get brownie points for neatness and extra observations (= dedication to your work) beyond those required.
