Drawing Elective Assignments for the week 5 and 6:
I) Find a reproduction of one of the following images and make a faithful copy that is twice the size of the reproduction you are copying. Follow the steps described below.
Images:
Roman copy of Doryphoros after a bronze original by Polykleitos.
c. 450-440 BC.
Aphrodite of Melos, Hellenistic sculpture. c. 150 - 100 BC.
Leonardo da Vinci: Studio del Corpo Humano. C. 1492
Michelangelo: David. 1501 -1504.
Hiram Powers: Greek Slave.
Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. Venus Anadyomene, 1848
Auguste Rodin: The Age of Bronze. 1876
1) Make two paper copies of the image by photo-copying from a book or
printing from a web image..
2) Draw grids (1/2" squares) on one of the copies / prints of the image.
3) Draw grids (1" squares) on your drawing paper.
4) Copy the drawing on your paper following what you see through the
grids on the copy.
5) Examine the proportions of the figure and describe the entire figure
with the length of the head as the basic unit. For example, "The
shoulder is 1 3/4 times the length of the head, etc.."
6) Now, take the other photo-copy / print of the image without the
grids.
7) Make a free-hand copy of the image.
8) Use a ruler to measure the proportion of your free-hand drawn figure.
II) Select one of your life drawings from Oct. 30 session. Re-draw the figure according to the proportions you found in the above image
