EDUCATION VALUES AND SOCIETY

12 CREDIT OPTION

Rationale

The onset of teenage years is closely associated in America with special concerns about violence. This small group will apply the same program categories: nature/nurture, family/school/tradition, religion and economics to the question: Why do teenagers become particularly prone to violence? Once again Japan will serve as a comparison.

Activities

To earn the extra 4 credits above the 8 unit option, students will read four short books: Hannah about violence. This small group will get a chance to apply the same program categories: nature/nurture, family/school/tradition, religion and economics to the question Why do teenagers become Arendt, On Violence, Perrin, Noel, Giving up the Gun: Japan's Reversion to the Sword,1543-1879, Canada, Geoffrey , Fist, Stick, Knife, Gun: A Personal History of Violence in America, Glassner, Barry , Culture of Fear: The Assault of Optimism in America. We will seminar and Helena will lecture quite extensively since this is her primary research area.

Products

We will form this small group into an internet conversation group and students will share written reflections on the readings over the internet, to create group-wide dialogue. In addition, each person will get the opportunity to write an extensive, multiple-draft, research paper on the topic of your choice. Early in the quarter you will select the topics and design the research process rather as though this was an individual contract.
