Parataxis came to my attention when I read the preface to 'Aestetische Theorie' (theory of aesthetics) by Theodor W. Adorno. Adorno died before having decided on the sequence in which the parts of the tractat were to be ordered in the book. He quarreled with the form 'book' because this medium forces part to follow one another, even though the author means to have the parts be mutually independent and quasi strewn around the subject matter. Not the syntactic gathering of connected aspects was to make the point but rather was the paratactic constellation of disconnected points to allow for the drawing of many lines.
My interest in the form arose when I found the following analogy: just as every intentional anticommunication contains both, the promise that it will decay towards communication, and some means to retard and even postpone this decay, so can every intentionally paratactic constellation contain both, the tendency to decay toward some syntactic sequential chain, and the austere resilience to inhibit this process for a very long while and some purpose. - I can even conjecture that paratax might function (if once I shall learn how) as the negative syntax of anticommunicative linguistic orientation. - Furthermore, if for the time being, I tolerate the assumption that we need hierarchical and heterarchical forms, modes, models, constructs, metaphors, structures, systems, for thinking and speaking and hermeneutics and 'human' relations, then I shall distinguish among all the ones I wish to attack, expose, if possible make disappear somehow some day: the reward-oriented-hierarchy as a society of humans.
Our syntax is pervaded by it, so that we use its paradigmatic (underground, unexposed) power even when we speak out or write against it. Thus it may be necessary to find, beyond a non-syntactic, the anti-syntactic modus linguae, just as it is necessary to find, beyond a non-fascist, the anti-fascist behavior.
I say conjecture, may be, etc. so that I not be understood as one who knows already what he is still looking for.
