In the 1940's, a devout Japenese Buddhist, Ishin Yoshimoto, developed
a method of mediation and self reflection called Naikan, which means "looking
inside". Through intense introspection, practictioners strive to
develop a natural and profound sense of gratitude for blessing bestowed
upon them by others - blessings that may otherwise go unnoticed.
The following exercise, to be done daily before bedtime, is from Naikan:
Gratitude, Grace and the Japanese Art of Self-Reflection [Stone Bridge
Press] by Gregg Krech, executive director of the ToDo Institute, a Naikan
education and retreat center in Vermont.
Make a list in response to each of these three questions:
1) What did I receive from others today?
2) What did I give to others today?
3)What troubles and difficulties did I cause others today?
At the end of the week, review your lists and write a thank you note
to one person for something specific he or she did for you or gave to you.
