Homework 1
Due in class (1:00pm) on Thursday of Week 2 (Jan. 16, 2003)
Textbook Problems
Conceptual Questions (p. 20): 1
Problems (p. 21): 6, 7, 10

Other Problems
Express each of the quadratic functions below in standard (a-b-c) form, vertex (a-h-k) form, and factored form. Sketch each function by hand, showing in the graph the x and y intercepts and the vertex.

A. f(x) = 0.5x2 + 7

B. f(t) = -2(t-1)(t+1)

C. y = -0.3(x-2)2 + 1

D. x = 0.5at2 + vot, where a and vo are positive real constants

Need a review of quadratic functions? See Chap. 8 in Math Text.

Brief Answers to Homework 1

10. 17.8 P

Other Problems
A. (i) given in a-b-c form: 0.5x2+7 ==> opens up, crosses y-axis at 7
(ii) a-h-k form: 0.5(x-0)2 + 7 ==> vertex at (0,7)
(iii) factored form: quadratic formula shows no real roots ==> can't be factored and does not cross the x-axis
B. (i) a-b-c form: -2t2+2 ==> opens down, crosses y-axis at 2
(ii) a-h-k form: -2(t-0)2 +2 ==> vertex at (0,2)
(iii) given in factored form: -2(t-1)(t+1) ==> crosses t-axis at 1 and -1
C. (i) a-b-c form: -0.3x2 +1.2x -0.2 ==> opens down, crosses y-axis at -0.2
(ii) given in a-h-k form: -0.3(x-2)2 + 1 ==> vertex at (2,1)
(iii) factored form: -0.3(x-0.174)(x-3.826) ==> crosses x-axis at 0.174 and 3.826
D. (i) given in a-b-c form: x = 0.5at2 + vot ==> opens up, crosses x axis at 0
(ii) a-h-k form: x = 0.5a(t+vo/a)2 - vo2/(2a) ==> vertex at (x,t) = (-vo/a,-vo2/(2a))
(iii) factored form: x = 0.5at(t+2vo/a) ==> crosses t-axis at 0 and -2vo/a
