INS Physics, Spring 2003
Workshop 1 -- brief answers
1. The force will be in the same direction with magnitude 0.14 N
2. The objects will move away from each other with initial accelerations of 0.013 m/s2 and 0.67 m/s2, respectively.
3. (c) F = 4.8 N at an angle of -148 degrees (=212 degrees)
4. b and d
5. Many answers are possible. One example: 10N pointing to the right, 10N pointing up, and 14N at an angle of -135 degrees.
Vectors handout, Week 1 -- brief answers
Exercises 1 & 2: F = 7.2 N at an angle of 170 degrees
Workshop 3 -- brief answers
1. (a) Measured value should be within ±5% of 33 k Ohms
(b) Measured value should be within ±5% of 100 k Ohms
(c) 133 k Ohms
(d) Approximately 25 k Ohms
(e) Resistance will vary from 0 Ohms to the value between points 1 and 3
2. The voltage should divide in proportion to the resistances: 1.1V on the 33 k Ohm resistor and 3.4 V on the 100 k Ohm resistor.
3. (a) The voltage across the capacitor rises slowly to a value close to the battery voltage of 4.5 V. The speed with which it rises depends on the product of the resistance and the capacitance, RC, which is called the the time constant (Exercise: check the units of RC). (b) The voltage across the capacitor will decrease slowly because it dicharges through the voltmeter. (c) The voltage across the capacitor will decrease more quickly in this case, and should go to 0 V.
Workshop 4 -- brief answers
1. There are 17 possibilities, as shown on the board in workshop.
2. 100||330||330||470||470 = 49.2 Ohms
3. (a) 100+330+470 = 900 Ohms (b) 1k||10k = 909 Ohms
