Say it Loud! Music For The Anti-Bias Educator
(volume one) MIT-TESC 2002-2004

Soul music seems to strike a chord with practically everyone. We believe that Soul music gets to the core; that Soul engages both the body and mind. So, when we decided to create a CD that would document the work that we've done that last two years in regards to anti-bias education, it seemed like a good idea to start with the soul...

The history of politically/socially charged Soul music is rich and compelling. we wanted to choose songs that would engage your mind and your body. We wanted to create a document that was representative of some of the issues that we have discussed during the past two years regarding race, equality, equity, and schooling. We wanted this document to be something that y'all might actually listen to while commuting to your school (singing at the top of your lungs while stuck in I-5 traffic)! Compiling the "right" tracks was a difficult process.

However, here are 20 songs that seem to us to hit at some of the root issues in anti-bias education. From The Impressions' sweet plea for the disenfranchised to "Keep on Pushing" to Otis Redding's plaintive advice to reluctant learners in "Stay in School", these songs shake, soothe, and swing.

Best of luck to all of you as you keep on pushing for anti-bias education. We hope that you find these songs inspiring, engaging, and perhaps even useful.
Peace,
