Analyzing
Sport Skills
-
Determine
the objectives of the skill. Many
skills have more than one objective
-
Note any
special characteristics of the skill
-
Repetitive
vs. non- repetitive
-
Predictable
environment vs. unpredictable environment
-
Study elite
athletes to confirm basics of skill
-
Divide the
skill into phases. A phase is defined as a connected group of movements
that appear to stand on their own and that the athlete joins together in
the performance of the total skill.
-
Divide each
phase into key elements
-
Preparatory
movements and mental set
-
Windup
[or backswing]
-
Force producing
movements
-
Follow
through or recovery
-
Understand
the mechanical reasons each key element is performed as it is
Identifying
and Correcting Errors in Sport Skills
-
Observe
the complete skill
-
Analyze
each phase and its key elements
-
Use your
knowledge of sport mechanics in your analysis
-
Select errors
to be corrected
-
Decide on
appropriate methods for the correction of errors
Choose
a skill related to your sport/activity journal that you would like to analyze. For
the information noted below, identify and write up the key elements to
observe. After you have outlined your sport skill, get in a group of 3,
and discuss why you chose the key elements and how you would watch for
each.Allow your group members to
give input, and revise your information after discussion as needed.Include
this activity in your journal.
§Outline
the objectives of this skill, noting any special characteristics to be
aware of.
§Identify
any professional athletes that you might want to observe to better understand
the basic techniques of this skill.
§Break
down the skill to the key elements
§Note
mechanical reasons for each key element.Include
any mathematical equations that apply.
