Joey had a bad case of the flu, and as a result contracted lobular pneumonia.

Q1: What organisms most commonly are causative agents of this type of acute bacterial pneumonia?

 

 Joey’s symptoms include fluid accumulation and dead white blood cells in the alveoli.  He is having chills, and ‘rusty’ sputum along with difficulty breathing, and his wife wants to know if he should be hospitalized.  The doctor was reluctant to admit him, but did prescribe an antibiotic.

Anita is 39-yrs. old, and about 15% above ideal body weight. She suffers from edema in her lower limbs.

Q1: Why would elevation and massage help remove the excessive fluid?

Case Study 3

Maxine has traveled to Greece, and has encountered a country full of smokers!

Q1: How might the typical Greek citizen’s exposure to tobacco smoke affect the cilia in their lungs?

Q2: Why might this explain why tobacco smokers have an increased incidence of respiratory infections?
 

Case Study 4

Nine year old Mike is racing his friends in the pool. They decide to see how far they can swim under water. Mike thinks it’s a good idea to hyperventilate before his turn.

Q1: How do you explain to him that this would not give him an advantage, and might even decrease his ability to make it to the other side of the pool?
