Three
years into running the Cafe, Toy decided she wanted the challenge of
another job. She applied for and got work at the Evergreen State College.
She taught basic restaurant skills, such as cooking and cleaning, to
people with disabilities. At the same time, she was a student at the
college. She studied humanities and graduated from Evergreen in 3 years.
While she taught at Evergreen, she widened her sphere through her teaching.
She contacted restaurants in Olympia and asked them what kinds of skills
they needed in people who applied to work there. She helped her students
to find jobs. Her activities were a great success and became a trigger
of local activities to help people who have disabilities in Olympia.
During her teaching career at The Evergreen State College, she realized
she liked to teach. She taught English to foreign students at the South
Puget Sound Community College for eight years after she graduated from
The Evergreen State College. She was one of the most popular teachers at
the community college. From these experiences, she believes everyone has
a right to an education no matter who they are.
Toy’s activities were extended after she retired from teaching.
Now, she works with the ZONTA club, an international organization to
help women
to improve their role in society. She travels around and encourages
women all over the world.
