As a student, I agree to:
- Attend all class meetings on time and thoroughly prepared to participate.
Do all the assigned readings prior to seminar (except those designated
to be read in class). If I must miss class because of illness or emergency,
I will notify faculty in advance by phone via voice mail, or by e-mail
and check with another student for assignments or handouts. Missing more than
one Saturday or two Wednesday classes may result in loss of credit. I am expected
to spend an average of 20 hours a week in and out of the classroom
with attention focused on my academic work in order to be awarded 8 credit
hours. For 12 credit hours, I am expected to spend an average of 30 hours
a week in and out of the classroom on academic work.
- Complete and submit all written work and assignments on time. All work is
to be typed, double-spaced, and proofread before submission. No late work
will be accepted (unless necessitated by illness or emergency, and arrangements
have been made with faculty). No ‘incompletes’ are possible. Students who
participate in context-setting activities for seminar may skip the response
paper for that week. If more than one assignment is late, or a student fails
to turn in more than one assignment, he or she will receive reduced credit
for the class. Students who do not turn in a completed first draft of their
political speech – including complete bibliography – on time will automatically
receive reduced credit.
- Every student must write his or her own work. IF YOU PLAGIARIZE, YOU WILL
BE REMOVED FROM THE PROGRAM, GET NO CREDIT AND BE REFERRED TO THE CAMPUS GRIEVANCE
OFFICER. Please consult the College’s policy on plagiarism (under "Academic
Honesty" on p. 18 of the student advising handbook) and talk to faculty
if you are confused at all about this issue.
- Promote a cooperative and supportive atmosphere within our program helping
to ensure that all people have the opportunity and encouragement to speak
freely; treat each person with civility and respect, especially when disagreeing
with the person's ideas, attitudes or assumptions; and remain sensitive to
any issues of racism, classism, sexism, homophobia or other forms of discrimination
within the program context.
- Take responsibility for your own work, interactions and responses. Take
the initiative in seeking guidance from faculty whenever significant difficulty
exists with the pace or content of the program. Promptly raise problems concerning
the program with faculty.
- Write a self-evaluation and faculty evaluation at the end of the quarter.
In order to receive credit for the program, signed, proofread copies of each
are to be submitted typed on the required forms, complete and on time.
- Cell phones and beepers will be kept off during class.
Faculty Agree to:
- Prepare a clear syllabus and answer questions regarding program requirements
- Deliver carefully prepared lectures and interactive presentations
- Respond in a substantive and timely fashion to student work
- Meet with students as soon as possible following student request
- Work to address program problems promptly when brought to the faculty’s
attention
- Maintain an encouraging classroom atmosphere weighted toward student-led
seminars, and intercede if disruptions occur
- Complete a prompt written evaluation of each student at the end of the term
