Editing Checklist
Beginning the peer editing process:
Content analysis
You, as the editor, are to write a critique of your partner’s speech, which should be roughly 1,000 words. You will be evaluated for the thoroughness of your editing. The critique needs to include the following:
1. What is the speech about? Summarize the message in one sentence. How is it an example of what the author has identified as his/her passion to work on this quarter?
3. Howard Schwartz noted in his guest lecture that eliciting an emotional response is the most important goal of a speech. What emotion does your partner’s speech arouse in you?
5. On a scale of 1 to 10, how effective is the ending? Defend your rating; if the ending is not effective, suggest how the author might approach it.
6. What literary techniques (metaphors, analogies, repetition, etc.) does the author use? Make suggestions, if needed.
7. Write at least one specific point the author did well. Cite an example.
8. Write at least one specific point the author needs to work on. Cite an example.
Delivery Analysis
9. What gestures does the author give while delivering the speech? What message(s) is she/he trying to convey?
10. Draw a line picture of the author’s voice pitch. For example,
