OBJECTIVE OF THE STRATEGY: To raise reader's expectations about meaning prior to reading text.

STUDENT PREPARATION: None

TEACHER PREPARATION:

1) Analyze material to be read. Determine major ideas both implicit and explicit.
2) Write those ideas in short, clear declarative statements.
3) Put statements in format to elicit anticipation and prediction making.

PROCEDURES:

  1. Before reading, distribute anticipation guide.
  2. Students respond, in writing to the guide.
  3. Discuss reader's predictions and anticipations.
  4. Assign text selection. Have students evaluate the statements in the light of the author's intent and purpose.
  5. Contrast reader's predictions with author's intended meaning.

Directions: Put a check in the FACT Column if you think the statement is a fact, and a check in the OPINION column if you think the statement is an opinion.
