General Requirement: Each student will keep a portfolio of her/his work to
be turned in at the end of the quarter. The purpose of the portfolio is to demonstrate
your effort and understanding of the material. Some things that the portfolio
might contain:
- Visual organizer for each chapter
- Worked out examples with problem statements
- Reflections
- Lesson plans and handouts from presentations
- Notes taken during class
- Anything else you feel helps me to assess your understanding of the material
presented in the class.
Weekly Schedule
- Week 2
- Bring at least one complete quantitative journal aritcle to class.
- Assignment
- Read Chapter 1
- Bring in an organizer for chapter 1 (notes, outline, mindmap)
- Think about the question: Is there anything in this chapter to help
me analyze research articles?
- Activities:
- Preassessment
- Create a list of terms to be investigated.
- Create a set of goals
- Decide on a tentative format for the course
- Share organizers
- Week 3
- Read Chapters 2 and 3
- Bring a visual organizer for each chapter
- Activities:
- Week 4
- Read Chapter 4 and 5
- Bring a visual organizer for each chapter
- Turn in at least one worked out problem for each of chapters 2 and 3.
Include a fairly complete problems statement.

- Read Chapters 6 and 7
- Bring in a visual organizer for each chapter
- Turn in at least one worked out problrm for each of chapters 4 and 5.
Include enough of a problem statement so that I can make sense of your
answer without looking it up in the book.

- Read Chapters 8 and 9
- Bring in a visual organizer for each chapter
- Turn in at least one worked out problem for each of chapters 6 and 7.

answer without looking it up in the book.
- Activities - (Tentative) Class will create posters clarifying the main
ideas for chapters 8 and 9.
- Week 7
- Read Chapters 10 and 11
- Chapter 10 is about misleading graphs. Bring in a misleading graph you
find in a newspaper or magazine or online. Write a paragraph to be turned
in about how good or bad the graph is. Be prepared to discuss the graph
in terms of the material in chapter 10.
- For Chapter 11 you will be divided in groups and will prepare a problem
at the end of chapter 11 for presentation.
