Introduction

This book of lesson plans is the culmination of a quarter long project that the students of the Evergreen State College Master in Teaching program, 2002-2004 undertook to get a better understanding of how to teach mathematics in the elementary (k-8) classroom. The students worked very hard, made amazing progress and produced this wonderful document. I edited their work, so I take full responsibility for any errors and omissions.

The students started by choosing topics and dividing into teams. The teams were then given time to research their topics as well as teaching methods. The students took part in several workshops conducted by practitioners to gain a better practical understanding of both the topics and the methods involved. The students then presented their work in a series of workshops for the class and produced the material for this book.
