Collaboratory Update for Winter Quarter, Week 4

Hello All,

This week we accomplished several goals in the development of our project,
and otherwise worked on researching CORBA/Java and Unix materials. Here is
the quick rundown from this week:

- with the help of David Metzler, a Sparc V station has been set up in the
Academic Computing Center for use in our project. Installation of OrbixWeb
and the Collab notebook software will begin this week with Dave's
assistance.

- our resource request to Borland Software was accepted, and two copies of
JBuilder are being shipped for the project.

- although unsuccessful, we began testing CU-SeeMe connections with PNNL.
The problem appears to be with the Codec protocols used on the Collab
internal reflector.

- we have started reviewing the existing experiment entry form classes (
NotebookForm.java, LoginForm.java, ExperimentForm.java) to determine how
the additional CORBA-defined classes will be implemented. One outstanding
question is whether the cookies used in these scripts will be replaced with
the CORBA architecture, or will they remain?

- held a brainstorming and organizational session on Saturday, minutes from
this meeting presented below.

- received information from Joe Pollack that the Collab IP addresses
198.128.64.xx should be open across the Evergreen firewall. We will try
and test this over this next week.

Notes From Project Meeting
Saturday 2/1/98
11:27 AM

Attendence:
	Eric, Pavan, Robert
	Travis Brooks was not present

What we did in this meeting:

In todayıs meeting we worked on our requirements document. We
looked over
the Bioinformatics website and we read Dougıs requirements suggestions that
he e-mailed everyone. We realized that our requirements need to be
re-written with an improved structure and basic approach.

Pavan, Robert, and myself brainstormed on Functional Requirements and
realized that we needed to better define the directory structure of the
notebook and exactly what terminology the notebook uses to refer to this.
We also realized that there is still some basic concepts that arenıt yet
understood. To help aliviate this problem, Pavan made a graphic of his
sketch from our last meeting with Keith and Jim Myers at EMSL. He is going
to put this graphic on the web page for everyone to refer to.

Eric and Robert checked out the sample notebooks on the EMSL
website to
try and reverse-engineer it somewhat. There were some problems with
responsiveness and entering information. Eric is working on a notebook
terminology and concepts document to help

Functional Requirements:

Client software will be able to upload files into a notebook server.
Client Software will be able to browse the notebook structure.
Client Software will be able to choose between multiple projects.
Client software will be able to add chapters to a notebook. (What about
notes and annotations?)

Developmental Requirements:

Metadata?
What is a better term for workspaces?
