Collaboratory Update for Winter Quarter, Week 6

Greetings everyone,

Here is the rundown for week six of our winter quarter Collaboratory
project:

- Started installation and testing of several OrbixWeb test scripts on
'Sitka' (our Sun Sparc machine). We were able to get OrbixWeb to generate
the necessary Java files from the IDL definitions, and we were able to
compile most of these classes successfully. Our biggest problem was in
getting the classpath configured properly, and once again Dave Metzler was
very helpful in this area.

- Installed Java Workshop from Sun Microsystems onto Sitka. JBuilder by
Borland was installed onto two of our group's personal machines. Began
review of manuals and development environment for both these products.

- Continued testing of collab notebook across the Evergreen network. We
are still having some problems with creating new notebook entries, although
the existing notebooks are browsable across our network.

- Continued study and research into CORBA, Java and Perl.

- Updated our resource request document to reflect changes suggested by
Keith Feanor.

- Discussed with Dave Metzler the possibility of using Pavan's laptop to
provide a CuSeeMe connection from the Academic Computing Center. Provided
a free IP address, this might be a workable solution. Alternatively, a
connection may be possible from the Macintosh laboratory (currently being
tested).

- We still cannot access PNNL from across the Evergreen firewall. It is
our understanding that we need to access the IP ranges (198.128.85.x, and
198.128.81.x) to communicate with the PNNL servers, and this information
has been relayed across to Joe Pollock, the network administrator in charge
our these routing tasks. Hopefully, this issue will get resolved soon.

- Continued updating of project web site (http://192.211.18.10:8080/sitka).

Until next week..
