Understanding Your Food

Food Report

This is both an oral and written assignment. Each person will research a food of your choice. Topics must be chosen no later than Wednesday, January 15th. Written reports will be due on Wednesday February 19th. No late papers will be accepted - no exceptions. Early papers are always welcome J

Reports should include the following:

- Name of food- any ‘nicknames’ & scientific/botanical names

-family of food - i.e.: peas are in the legume family

- serving size [ ie if peas then a half cup cooked, is typically a serving size – or a medium sized apple]

-significant nutrients contained in a serving - i.e. protein, fat, fiber, vitamins.....

-cost per serving ( go to a few grocery stores and find the price range )

-tips on selective storage & preparation. recipes

-where is it grown? when is it grown?

-special properties? - any medicinal properties?

- consumer reports

Paper should include at least 3 footnotes. Bibliography should include at least 1 internet source, but no more than 3, except if they are electronic versions of print material.

Oral Reports

Each person will give a 5 - 10 minute oral presentation to the class. Date to be assigned January 22nd. This is to be in the format of an ‘info-mercial’. Try to sell us your food - tell us all the great things about it in a light hearted - creative way.

If you do not complete this assignment, you will lose a credit.
