Mark Retzlaff spent two years at the University of Washington studying physics before coming to The Evergreen State College in the spring of 2004. His study at TESC has centered on gaining an understanding of social and cultural dynamics that affect the marketplace. Mark has supplemented his physical science background with The Philosophy of Science, Individual and Society: Studies of American and Japanese Literature and Society, Research Methodologies in the Social Sciences, Principles of Economics, Buddhist Psychotherapy, and Energy Systems, out of which Sustainability in On-Campus Housing grew.
Energy Systems was designed to prepare students to complete a research project during the winter and spring quarters. Both Mark and Robin became so engaged and motivated by their developing project that they decided to devote more of their time and energy on the project. Winter 2005 quarter was spent in a independent learning contract with faculty sponsor from Energy Systems, EJ Zita. To read more about the program Energy Systems, click here.
They both completed the project through an independent learning contract with Nancy Parkes, faculty of In Search of Sustainability.
