Requests_Comments: Dear Professor Nakasone:
Hello, my name is Adrienne Barrett. This quarter is my first at Evergreen. I am a
Washington native, and I tranferred back to the state from New Mexico (I was studying
Conservation and Documentary studies at the College of Santa Fe). After a month among
scientists in the rainforest, studying Neotropical Ethnobotany on Ometepe Island in
Nicaragua, I realized that scientific research alone is not what I want to do. I want
to combine design and communication with my endeavors into the realms of science and
nature.
The program I am currently taking is interesting, but has not been bringing me
toward my goals. About a month ago when I was waiting to speak with R.T. Leverich about
his class, your T.A. informed me about your class and said that I should consider it.
Your program, Patience, really appeals to me due to its self-directed study emphasis.
I will be working with SEED as the PR coordinator for the synergy conference in the
winter, and in addition to this I would like to be in a program that is more suited to
my interests. The PR postition entails a lot of media work (articles, ads, and radio
spots) promoting the conference within the Evergreen and greater Oympia community. At
this point, I have many interests that I would like to be pursuing right now. I
originally came to Evergreen intending to study sustainable design, but the program was
full. I still really want to learn about and gain experience in this topic. I have also
been working on documentary about biodiesel. I have not even begun to edit it, but I
would like to do so soon, and I would really like to incorporate some animation into it
if at all possible. Finishing the project up well could be a quarter's work in itself.
I really want to be learning more about the natural world-- plants, animals, ecosystems
and energy etc. I plan to go to Costa Rica from January 3- 19 to take a dance workshop
and take some video footage for a documentary.
*Could this be a part of my course work if I were in your course?
*Are you accepting new students into your program in the winter?
*Would I be elgigble for your class (I will have 41 credits at the end of the quarter)?
Thanks for taking the time to read this. I could tell you more about my aspirations and
experiences if you are interested. I would really appreciate any adive that you have to offer,
concerning studying at Evergreen or pursuits in conservation etc. outside of the classroom.
Take care, and thanks for your energy!
Sincerely, Adrienne Barrett
