Reefs formed only in a zone extending from 30°N to 30°S of the equator; reef-forming corals do not grow at depths of over 100 ft (30 m) or where the water temperature falls below 72°F (22°C); corals are not the only reef-forming organisms; three main types of coral reefs: fringing, barrier, and atolls.  Environmental pressures include damage from increased coastal development, water pollution, tourism, runoff containing agricultural chemicals, abrasion by ships’ hulls and anchors, smothering by upstream sedimentation, poisoning or dynamiting during fishing, and harvesting for jewelry.

Avoid an unusual and unfamiliar word just as you would a reef-Julius Caesar

It is so rare to meet with a man outdoors who cherishes a worthy thought in his mind, which is independent of the labor of his hands. Behind every man’s busy-ness there should be a level of undisturbed serenity and industry, as within the reef encircling a coral isle there is always an expanse of still water, where the depositions are going on which will finally raise it above the surface.-Henry David Thoreau
