So You Want to be a Teacher Program

Letter to a Teacher Writing Assignment

Due: At the beginning of seminar, Friday, Sept. 30

The objectives of this assignment are to give students an opportunity to begin thinking about teaching and learning and for faculty to get samples of students’ writing.

The assignment: Write a letter to one of your former teachers, either praising something that person did that was especially effective or offering advice on how the person might have been a more effective teacher.  Be specific.  Don’t just say, “I liked the examples you used in class.”  Instead, say what kind of examples the teacher used and how they helped you to understand the material.  Don’t just say, “Your tests were crappy!”  Instead, tell how they were crappy and how that crappiness affected you.  The letter should be two or three pages long, double-spaced.  It should be a good demonstration of your writing skills.

If possible, bring an electronic draft (need not be a final draft) of the paper to Computer Workshop on Thursday.  This draft should be in electronic format – either on a disk or email it to yourself – so you can copy it into webX.
