Workshop Assignment # 4

ANNOTATION
Assigned Week 3 / Due Week 5

The task: Write or steal someone else’s writing and thoroughly annotate the text.

The "function" of your annotation can vary: annotations can be scholarly (fake scholarship, I would prefer); they can be overlays of fictions/narratives in their own right; they might be corrections and criticisms, explanatory, etc. You could annotate as an act of “reading,” perhaps using Barthes’s reading of Sarrazine as a model (see our Reader and Culler, 70-74).

If there’s a point to this it is to “open up” a text, to lay bare through the annotations the multivalence and indeterminacy of an otherwise limited text.
