Evergreen Library Remodel Seminar

Spring 2006

Rationale

The library remodel will require at completion the final design and implementation of a group of specialized public service and content management spaces. Circulation, SAIL, Archives, Reference, the Curriculum Room and Children's Area, Periodicals and Gov Docs will be setting up new shops, building new routines, and rebuilding old ones with old and new machines. Library faculty and staff share a goal to maximize the amenities and opportunities for positive change presented by the remodel. Some of us have the responsibility to build an entirely new special needs room, yet to be named.

Working Knowledge Approach

We're putting together a study group to think ahead and make plans for this final push. Volunteers from several areas of the greater library are pulling together into a limited-term knowledge project - sort of a disappearing task seminar. We've gathered a few short readings about library design and systemic change. As we study and make decisions together, we hope to lay the ground for coordinated independent action when the push comes.

Group Structure

We're shooting for Thursday afternoon seminar meetings this Spring, probably six or eight weeks in a row. We'll likely spend some time each week with a presentation and discussion of participating areas. We'll focus on the concept of universal design in shaping educational environments.
