JHANSI KI RANI: THE WARRIOR QUEEN (1991)

Jhansi Ki Rani (The Warrior Queen) was produced by a co-ordinated studies program at The Evergreen State College: "East and West: The Twain Do Meet." It was performed at The Washington Center in Olympia, and then at the Meany Hall at The University of Washington, sponsored by Ragamala. Later that year it was performed at Washington State University in Pullman.

"Jhansi Ki Rani" was conceived and researched as part of an Endowment for the Arts Choreography Fellowship by Ratna Roy. The script was written by Late Sri Dhiren Dash. Mr. Dash himself came to The Evergreen State College as visiting faculty, with two musicians, Lakshmikant Palit and Pagal Swain to help direct the dance drama that included classical Orissi, jatra theatre, and classical Western ballet for the Raj scenes. Local musicians, Shobha Raman and Dipankar Ganguly joined the team for live music. There were 33 dancers, students and faculty at The Evergreen State College, in performance.
