Arts, Environment and the Child: Walking the Wheel of the Seasons

Natalie Pyrooz

My two main passions in this world are arts and our natural environment. So, I've taken quite a few of both science and arts classes. I like that in Evergreen they can kind of be blended together. I'm interested in connecting with kids in this class because I think we can all learn something from their innocence, as their eyes have not been completely opened to the tragedies of this world. Sometimes it's hard to take a break from our daily lives and mindsets to consider an alternate way of being. I also really like how Olympia strives to be such a sustainable community, and that there are permaculture examples abounding around us to learn from as we go about our daily routines.

One thing I am really excited about is that my partner and I just bought a house out in Summit Lake. It's really beautiful out there, Kennedy Creek runs through the property, and we've already been observing its rise and fall as summer has progressed into autumn. I feel very in touch with the nature surrounding our home. We have a large garden that is in need of a lot of work, and I hope to apply some of the things we learn here about the garden to my own; and to incorporate useful medicinal and culinary herbs and native plants.

I have a website including my artwork and links to various sustainable sites at www.olyart.org/natalie
