[edit] Problem

  • The project is too open-ended to put a strict plan to
  • Team members disagree on a plan
  • The original plan goes awry

[edit] Context

Image:Planning.jpeg It is generally difficult to complete any sort of project without some kind of plan.

[edit] Discussion

Even the simplest everyday projects we execute require some sort of plan. Going to the grocery store for example. Even with a task as simple as this things can go wrong, you get a flat tire, the store is out of what you need, but you cannot always plan for everything (see Dealing with Uncertainty. Even if you don't carefully think out and write down a plan for every little project you do, on something more complex or important it is an excellent resource and no large project should be without one.

[edit] Solution

Replanning is a common solution to anything that goes wrong with the original plan. Also, sometimes it is good to have a basic plan something more like guidelines to go by rather than an extremely detailed plan. Or better yet, have both. This way if something goes wrong with a small detail, then you have a broader plan to fix the problem within.
