You should know this before you start. If you don't then you cannot truly comprehend the mission, need, objectives, and methods of your project. Also, you will not actually know if your project is truly completed. This is the thinking before leaping...

Sit down and THINK about it!
If you are working with others, do a group brainstorming session. If you are working on your own spend some time writing about your project and its purpose, create a mission statement, your vision, goals, why is your project needed by yourself and or others? What are the methods you are going to use to complete your project? All of these should help you fully understand your project, it will make it easier for you to explain yourself to others, gain support whether it be moral or financial. And you won't be jumping off a cliff!
