I found the following quote to be very relative to our understanding of installation art in this class: “The artist, as a rule does not perform to the audience, rather it is this open-ended interaction with the potential of the real-life situation that mark the viewer’s experience.” (De Oliveira 107) I like the importance put on the artist not performing but interacting. This is against what most have been brought up with when it comes to the topic of art. As children, we are taught that art is merely a “pretty thing” to look at. Thinking past that limit is the artists job. They create and present and we like or don’t like. But now, especially with installation art, interaction is the role between creator and viewer. It is not enough for the creator to present and the viewer to yay or nay. There has to be a relationship between the creator and viewer and the catalyst is the art. We need to go deeper into this aspect of the creative process. How does the art affect the relationship between the creator and the viewer?
