The concept that interested me the most in Inside the White Cube by Brian O’Doherty is the concept of the frame as it relates to its art. O’Doherty states, “The stability of the frame is as necessary as an oxygen tank is to a diver. Its limiting security completely defines the experience within.” (O’Doherty 18) This thought is very eye opening for me. I’ve never thought of a picture frame as more than as a tool to display art. As O’Doherty went further to explain the change that photography brought on with its border within (or without) a frame I started to think about how these borders are defining the art’s environment and separating the two. This furthered me into the thought of how this concept is applied to installation art and what is defined as a frame. Is installation art framed by the room it’s in? By the building? City?
