In Brian O’Doherty’s book Inside the White Cube He attempts to explain the effect of the gallery space on the viewer. O’Doherty describes how the gallery space creates a barrier between the so-called non-avant-garde and the art, He explains how the gallery space creates a “temporal moat around the work”. He says for the people who are able to understand the work, it is almost like a currency that they have that others do not. The people who do not understand the work are left with a puzzle and it may be sometime later before they figure the puzzle out.
