Week 5: Inside the White Cube
“Most people who look at art now are not looking at art; they are looking at the idea of “art” that they carry in their minds” (pg. 82)
There does seem to be a certain audience, as O’Doherty would say, of art today. They seem to be the upper middle class who feels comfortable in a museum or gallery setting or artists. This audience has a stronger background than most of the arts and therefore has a biased view. They have seen art before and know there are different types of art, what is considered art and what they like. But it also seems that artists today are also coming from this biased place and has an effect on what art is being produced. What does art that does not have this behind it look like? Can we see it in other cultures art? If we can are they being influenced by the “art” before them? Does this non-influenced art exist?
