“The camera introduces us to unconscious optics as does psychoanalysis to unconscious impulses.” (XIII)
Walter Benjamin describes film and more specifically the camera as a medium for capturing details in everyday life that tend to escape our eye. He compares this idea to the process of interpreting actions that occur due to past events and/or experiences subconsciously. By use of camera and film techniques such as camera angles and “focusing on hidden details of familiar objects,” we capture specific emotions in which we can exaggerate.
I believe this allows for the cinematographer to manipulate situations and invoke explicit feelings. This permits for control over the audience and influence the viewers’ perceptions.
