Dave Hickey had a remarkably balanced perception of the artist and the critic. He clarified the relationship between a piece of writing and a piece of work as; without the art, there is no writing, and if the art endured the test of time, the writing would either bob after it or fade away. Writing does not do total justice for a piece of art. Even if the art were encountered in its context, through explanation, the experience would be minimized.
Does the critique process in class decrease the experience of the art itself?
