Installation Art in the New Millennium
Author and institution
From the 1960’s onward artists have became increasingly more aware of the relationship between artist and institution. In modern times artists seem to be moving away from the traditional coexistence between art and institution by resiting the tradition and constructing projects outside of the museum environment.
Interesting thai artist: Navin Rawanchaikul—I [love] TAXI (2001)---for which he invited artists to create their own installations in the back of taxi cabs for future passengers to enjoy. I like the concept of reducing the audience size to that which a taxi cab can accommodate, I also like the randomness involved in who actually sees the art.
Photograph=view, no transmission of experience.
Installations are more frequently being described as “projects” thus denoting the inhertant collaborative aspects involved in the process of art construction.
“while artists struggle for acknowledgment of their authorial credentials, institutions have moved away from being solely collectors to being also producers of new works. However, conflicts of ownership may arise between artists and commissioning institutions.” Pg.81
Exchange and interaction
“Installation provides places for exchange in which the audience becomes tan integral part of the work…the artist, as a rule does not perform to the audience, rather it is this open0ended interaction with the potential of the real-life situation that mark the viewer’s experience.” Pg.107
