This is my Week 2 forum, after i get done, im going to fill out my W-2 form
I believe that one of most dificult things an installation artist has to achieve is "exchange and interaction" I have found that within my own installation's it is hard to draw the public in enough for them to want to interact with the installation. I have a strong conection with the display of art in a public space but i also realize that the general public doesnt give a shit about art. The first part of the reading talks about the "institution", which to me kind of has a negative connotation. I am inspired by the concept of site specific installations, so how is someone going to be inspired by an art gallery or a museum? Maybe in an art gallery some sophisticated yuppies could marvel over my masterpiece and then drive 3 blocks to starbucks in their Toyota Prius and drink their non-fat soy latte and talk about it in a sophisticated manor as if the rest of the world was so un-educated, but maybe thats not who i want to reach. If art work is only viewed by the art comunitee, what good does that do? I guess they could just write about it in some yuppie art book for other yuppie artists to read, but how does that spread a message? I would much rather have just have some guy walk by my art and be like "what the hell is that" and maybe feel a little too awkward to take a closer look, but when he walks home to drink his folgers he just might sit down and give it a second thought. I dont think that its an accomplishment to make artists think about art, I would find it more of an accomplishment to provoke thought in someone who knows nothing about art.
