After reading "The Photographic Message" I was very confused but at the same time all of it made sense.  I really enjoyed reading this chapter.  I really liked the section where he talks about texts connection to an image.  "In other words, and this is an important historical reversal, the image no longer illustrates the words; it is now the words which, structurally, are parasitic on the image." There is text connected to every image now.  Even as a class we type up artist statements that attempt to rationalize and define our works.  The idea behind photography is that it is a medium that visually describes reality or some type of rhetoirc without the structure of written language.  I understand now why we are always told "no discalaimers!".  "These two structures are co-operative but, since their units are heterogeneous, necessarily remain separate from one another."  A photograph should not need text for the message to transmitted and and vice versa.  But also a photograph can work together with text to translate a message in two forms on linguistically and one visually.
