“We could just say: “Okay! You’re right! Art is bad, silly, and frivolous. So what? Rock-and-roll is bad, silly, and frivolous. Movies are bad, silly, and frivolous. Basketball is bad, silly, and frivolous”.” (203)
I thought that this quote could not have been stated any more simply or any better. Hickey’s right, art is no different than a lot of things we do such as listen to music, watch movies, or sports; it’s just another way for us to release, and to express. Art always receives a lot of criticism, but only from people who have never looked into it, just as basket ball would probably seem strange to people who had no concept of sporting. I like how Hickey refers to art as “ more like cocaine” he says that it, “gives us pleasure while intensifying our desires.” I don’t know if I would agree that it intensifies our desires but I would agree that it manipulates our desires. Partially I would say that the frivolousness of art is part of its beauty, it is the fact that it is not necessary but still exists that makes it wonderful.
