ACTIVITIES: Discussed with group members, Karen and Alisa, about time to meet. We designated working on Monday around 2pm at our areas.
LEARNING: Karen has just joined the group. Discussed possible plant and decor options.

ACTIVITIES: Met with Karen and went over the site description. Alisa was unable to make it, but called ahead of time. Karen made sketches of the areas, and we filled in the site description. We also discussed questions we had, and plans for the areas.
LEARNING: We need to work on identifying plants. We found some wild strawberries under the grass in Area #2 (against the building).

ACTIVITIES: Found and e-mailed places to volunteer.
LEARNING: I have a couple options for places to volunteer. I have decided to volunteer at IslandWood

WEEK THREE (October 11- October 17)

TIME SPENT: 1.5 hours
ACTIVITIES: Checked out Gardening with Native Plants, and read many parts of it.
LEARNING: I found a lot of plants/shrubs that might work for our areas. I marked some pages to shpw my partners. There are a lot of native plants that are decorative.

TIME SPENT: 2 hours
ACTIVITIES: Visited IslandWood's Garden and met with Rachael. She walked me around the garden, and answered questions.
LEARNING: I learned how floating row covers work, and the purpose of them. I also figured out what I'll be doing at IslandWood. I'll be working on winterization, propagation, composting and other maintance related activities. I might also have the oppurtunity to work with children.

WEEK FOUR (October 18- October 24)

ACTIVITIES: Discussed what I had learned from my reading with Alisa.
LEARNING: We began a list of possible plants.

ACTIVITIES: Tried to start pulling grass. Cleaned up the ferns around the sign, and pulled weeds. I also began tackling the weeds around the maple vine and trash can. Picked up sticks, and trash. Cut off the suckers on the tree in upper area.
LEARNING: The grass is overwhelming!! It will definitely need to be done as a group.

ACTIVITIES: Cleaned up part of a bed, covered with sterile soil. Planted spinach seeds, and covered with floating row cover.
LEARNING: Learning about winterizing and growing veggies during the colder winter days.

ACTIVITIES: I cut back the raspberries. Pulled out the plants growing in the straw bales. Mulched the perenials with compost and straw (from bales). Put sage in the dehydrator. Made phone calls trying to find someone to bring manure to the garden.
LEARNING: I learned to mulch around fruit tress and things using a donut. Otherwise shrews and mice make homes in the mulch and will begin eating the wood. So you don't mound the mulch up to the trunk.

LEARNING: You can tell where the compost comes from based on how it has composted. Today's compost had a lot of trash and eggshells. It came from the dining hall.
