Spring Project Log

WEEK 2

Date: 3/11/07

Time Spent: 1 hr

Area: Procurement

Partners: Allyson and Sherry

Activities: Talked over plans for the quarter, looked through notebooks related to our area.

Learning: Learned that you can pick plants from state forests if you have a permit and Allyson knows where to get one. Also, Sherry has many plants on her land that we will be able to take advantage of.

Questions/Needs: Need that permit to procure plants from the Capital Forest.

Date: 4/17/07

Time Spent: 4 hrs

Area: Procurement

Partners: None

Activities: Hiked through the woods of Capital Forest and found a few plants that might make good transplants.

Learning: Identified a new favorite plant, our local version of the shamrock, the redwood sorrel! I was so happy when I saw it, it's just like my South American shamrock that I have in my house and I just couldnt believe I had never seen one before. Also found Elderberry, lots of trillium, and got a general idea for the kind of vegetation that is in that area so that when someone asks for something specific, I'll already know if it is there.

Questions/Needs: Still need to find out how to get that procurement permit.

TOTAL HOURS THIS WEEK: 5

WEEK 3

Date: 4/21/07

Time Spent: Class time

Area: Procurement, Mixed Forest A

Partners: Allyson, Sebastian

Activities: Allyson and I went on a procurement journey through Evergreen roadways. Sebastian and I worked on sprucing up Mixsed Forest A

Learning: Found out that there are lots of plants we can use for the garden right here on campus! To name a few, Vanilla Leaf, Bleeding Heart, Trillium, False Lilly of the Valley, Elderberry, and more. Got to know Sebastian a little better and learned the difference between the conquest-based male approach to weeding (pull everything out and replant) and the nurturing female approach (carefully pull the undesired species out and leave the rest alone!).

Questions/Needs: Better equipment for gathering plants so that we can get them with the dirt still around them.

Date: 4/24/07

Time Spent: 7 hrs

Area: Procurement in Capital Forest

Partners: None

Activities: I hiked through Capital Forest all day in search of procurables.

Learning: Found lots of great plants and spent a beautiful day in the woods. The two most exciting discoveries this time were lots and lots of false lillies of the valley and a giant patch of wild ginger. Also there were lots of fairybells, elderberry, and a little corydalis, plus everything I have found on previous trips. This outing is journaled with more information about it there.

Questions/Needs: I need to figure out how to get a local procurement permit and how much it will cost. This permit is different I think from the other one we need ...

TOTAL HOURS THIS WEEK: 7

WEEK 4

Date: 4/25/07

Time Spent: 1 hr

Area: Procurement at my house

Partners: None

Activities: Looked around my property for possible plants to procure.

Learning: I already knew we had a bunch of Thimbleberry but turns out we also have some Lupine. There seems to be plenty of Lupine in the garden already but if not, I have a little here. Later in the summer there will be pineapple weed, but not sure if this would be a desirable plant to have in the LHG.

Questions/Needs: Are any of these plants needed at the LHG?

TOTAL HOURS THIS WEEK: 1

WEEK 5

Date: 5/8/07

Time Spent: 4 hrs

Area: Procurement at Evergreen

Partners: Lorn and Sebastian

Activities: Had a good time scavenging Evergreen for plants Sebastian needs in his area. Planted bleeding heart, vanilla leaf, inside out flower, and false lilly of the valley.

Learning: Found a plant by the beach that smells really good and looks like False Solomon's seal! Also located more false lilly of the valley on campus. Found out there is a cool 3 story tree house in the woods, which we climbed up into.

Questions/Needs: Is the beach plant really false solomon's seal.

TOTAL HOURS THIS WEEK: 4

Date: 5/19/07

Time spent: 1.5 hrs

Area: Skok and LHG

Partner: Allyson

Activities: Procured along HWY 101, cleaned up behind the longhouse and made a list of tools.

Learning: Found lots of bunchberry! My favorite discovery however was some sort of wild sage growing in a clearcut. I brought one home and put it in my garden and it seems to be doing well. We also found a Vancouver groundcone which is a parasitic thing that looks really strange, kind of like an orchid and kind of like a fungus. Superweird, there was only one of them. So much beargrass too! We got some serviceberry as well and I also found out that I have serviceberry growing in my yard.
