Compost is the process of decomposition of organic matter.
HUMUS is the desired product. ( = matured compost) Organic matter in the soil keeps the soil a uniform temperature.
Microorganisms in the soil:
phages/viruses
algae
bacteria
fungi
protozoa
actinomycetes
Root nodules in legums produce NITROGEN change nitrates to ammonia and ammonia to nitrates
IMPORTANT:
1. feed microbes (manure for Nitrogen, phosphate, potash)
2. fermentation (increase temp 160’ F*)
3. aeration* (1st-8th week)
4. TURN AFTER 3 WEEKS, THEN EVERY 5 WEEKS
*good for insulating compost in winter: grass thatch roof or burlap cover
*good for aeration: rye straw and corn stalk in 4” bundles
