Week 3: Digging in

I sat and gently worked the grass away and found worlds of things under the grass. The grass is haavly matted but I am not sure we should hoe it out. I found vetch, wood violet, wild strawberry and one or two things that I have yet to identify. I don't think they will grow through the grass but I hate to just hoe the grass out becasue it is really beautiful to see these tiny little plants trying to grow.

We started hoeing, started to trim the fern, but I think when I go back I will trim it even further. We want to get a list of all the original plants that were there so we can decide on what to put in. I have a book of native flowering plants and there are some that I want to try. But it may be that by the time we decide some of what we put in won't show until the next season. Long after we have come and gone. But than that is so much what gardening is. I do love to plant something and look forward to what it will do. But there is also something that is equally satisifying by putting in something you know you may never see but will thirive. So either way it will do and I am anxious to get going. But again, back to the grass, I am not sure we need to just rip it out. Well see.
