Project Area: Riparian Hillside

WEEK 2, Project Log #1

Date: April 16th, 2007 (Monday)

Time Spent: 0.5 hours

Partner(s): (---)

Activities: Walked through my area (Riparian Hillside) to find nettles and other plants.

Learning: Found out where the nettles are and saw that the horsetail is opening up. I tried to remember the species in the area but couldn't. I should draw some of the plants and look them up.

Questions: Which plants are the species from the list handed out? How far does the Riparian Hillside reach exactly?

Total Cumulative Hours: 0.5

WEEK 3, Project Log #2

Date: April 19th, 2007 (Thursday)

Time Spent: 2 hours

Partner(s): (---)

Activities: Drawing three plants, being scared by birds that didn't see me, finding the plants I drew in different locations in the LHG. Later research to find out which plants I drew.

Learning: I noticed that once I drew the plants I suddenly saw them everywhere because I now know exactly what they look like. The hummingbird that came by twice went for the same shrub with bright magenta flower both times, must be yummy.
The first plant I drew was a stinging nettle (which I already knew), the second was a salmon berry (Rubus spectabilis). I haven't figued out the third plant yet. While it has similarities with the oregon grape, it's a different plant.

Questions: I'm still trying to figure out the borders of the Riparian Hillside. I wonder what plant the hummingbird was feeding from. I wanted to include scale in the drawing, but can't figure out how to write it down. If my pictures is half as big as the plant, would that be 2:1 or 1:2 ?

Total Cumulative Hours: 2.5 hours

Stinging Nettle

**************************************

Date: April 21st 2007 (Saturday)

Time Spent: (3 hours for class)

Partner(s): Donna & Tracy

Activities: Pulling Horsetail, cutting back dead parts of fern, identifying some plants, getting wet!

Learning: I know a lot more of the species in the section now (the third plant I drew Thursday is actually an Oregon Grape), and I understand at least the downhill boundary of the area (uphill I'm still figuring out). The periwinkle intrigues me somehow. I saw it covers the entire north side of Lab II, and now I want to know how it can be used medicinally. I figured out the plant the hummingbird was feeding from, it's a red flowering currant. I will be watching for more on sunny days!

Questions: Which plants should go in the area that we cleared of buttercup, horsetail, herb robert, and dead fern? Where should the new trail go from between the rock and the (christmas) tree? Should we pull the dandelion? Should we move the unhappy-looking oregon grape?

Total Cumulative Hours: (I don' think classtime counts, so still 2.5)

Date: April 23rd, 2007 (Monday)

Time Spent: 2 hours

Partner(s): (---)

Activities: Translating species from the Longhouse garden (and others we talked about in class) into German.

Learning: This has been incredible. I knew most of the plants we talk about already (especially the trees), but they were like new species to me because I couldn't make the connection to my experiences with them because they had all been under different names. I am making a table for myself (or anyone else who wants it) where I list common plant names and some animals with their English and their German name. Wow, just wow! While doing this I came across black gooseberry and saw that it is native and likes to be on slopes near water. Now I want a black gooseberry on the riparian hillside! They attract hummingbirds!

Questions: Can I get one? Where would it go?

Total Cumulative Hours: 4.5

WEEK 4, Project Log #3

Date: April 29th, 2007 (Sunday)

Time Spent: 5 hours

Partner(s): Tracy

Activities: Weeding at the Longhouse Garden (pulling horsetail, dandelion, and herb robert), while Tracy was putting in part of the new trail. Then going back to McLain forest to look at the plants there again, especially the areas that represent our site.

Learning: It takes much more time to pull all the horsetail than I ever would have thought. I found a plant with signage, but it is currently hidden between lots of horsetail and the grass that Lorn is pulling. The hummingbirds were back and very curious! One came up and sat on a branch just a couple of feet away watching me pull dandelion, then it came even closer (just a handreach away), and sat down and stared at me for a bit before it flew away. I think it was a rufous hummingbird. At McLain Creek I realized once again how little horsetail grows within the patches of lily of the valley, miner's lettuce, and bleeding heart. I think any of those combinations would be great in the "bog," and across the path where the non-native grass is down to the water.

WEEK 6, Project Log #5

No time spent in garden.

WEEK 7, Project Log #6

Date: May 19th, 2007 (Saturday)

Time Spent: 1 hour

Partner(s): Tracy, Donna

Activities: Finishing weeding from classtime

Learning: Since I hadn't been out in the garden for a while I was amazed how fast things grew. Where there didn't seem to be any plants before, now there is a thicket of green.

Questions: ---

Total Cumulative Hours: 10.5

WEEK 8, Project Log #7

Date: May 25th, 2007 (Friday)

Time Spent: 5 1/2 hours

Partner(s): Tracy, Donna, Mike

Activities: Lots of weeding and pruning. We discussed some of what we had done during the quarter in the area, continued working on the new trail, and mulched some of it. I tasted my first salmonberry, and I liked it.

Learning: Morning glory can even choke horsetail and vine maple. Donna and I thought about what we should call the area below the willows by the water. It is beautiful and we spotted so many different birds there (even one yellow canary but I missed it). We decided on "bird haven." It's like a little green cave. I think we should put a bench by the trail down there so people can quietly sit and watch the birds.

Questions: How did the morning glory get down into the riparian hillside?

Total Cumulative Hours: 16
