Winter Project LogNOTE: DRUPAL DID NOT COPY MY FORMATTING AT ALL, ALTHOUGH IT PRETENDED TO! (MY PREVIEW SHOWED ALL THE SPACING INTACT)
WEEK 2 1/23 Tuesday Time Spent: 2 hrs Learning: Got to know the layout and presence of the site better. By journaling, noticed things about Salal that I had not noticed before. 1/24 Wednesday Activity: 1st meeting with group members. Time Spent: 1 hr Learning: Talked about our assignments for the week. Looked around the site. Suzanne spoke to us about last quarter's achievements and we made some plans for this quarter. Decided to meet every Wednesday. TOTAL HOURS THIS WEEK: 3 WEEK 3 1/25 Thursday Activity: Spent time with both ID and medicinal use plant books. Time Spent: 2 hrs Learning: Learned how to make a plant remedy for a condition I have been treating pharmaceutically (haven't tried this out yet but will shortly). 1/26 Friday Activity: Looked through some of site materials online. Time Spent: 1 hr Learning: Got a more concrete idea of where we are starting out from and what our goals are for this quarter. 1/28 Sunday Activity: Group meeting Time Spent: 2 hrs Learning: Worked on twig ID. Suzanne walked around the area with us and pointed out some plants she had identified from last quarter. 1/29 Monday Activity: Looked over Longhouse Garden notebook for Mixed Forest A. Time Spent: 1 hr Learning: Saw the changes that have happened since the time that notebook was made. Interesting to see how the area developed and the differences between then and now. 1/30 Tuesday Activity: Sitting at LHG and reading plant books Time Spent: 2 hrs Learning: My Dad loaned me a number of plant books from his collection and there are some neat ones, including some old ethnobotany books and a book by Nancy Turner about coastal food plants. It is nteresting reading about all the uses Native Americans had for the local plants. 1/31 Wednesday Activity: Weekly group meeting. Time Spent: 2 hrs Learning: Divided up the work for next week and shared resources/learning we had come up with over the past week, including texts and websites to use for our area description and techniques for gardening/pruning. TOTAL HOURS THIS WEEK: 10 hrs WEEK 4 2/7 Wednesday Activity: Weekly group meeting. Time Spent: 2 hrs Learning: Mostly hands-on work, including lots of pruning and raking. Found a wild currant underneath the overgrown foliage! It had leaned all the way over and was growing sideways due to overgrowth on top of it so we pulled the invading plants off of it, pushed it back upright, and set a log behind it to keep it standing. TOTAL HOURS THIS WEEK: 2 WEEK 5 2/9 Friday Activity: Spent more time with plant ID and medicine books. Time Spent: 1 hr Learning: More questions than answers today. I don't understand how one culture uses a plant for one thing while another culture uses the same plant for something totally opposite! Is it a question of collective belief in the plant's medicinal properties that make it work a certain way or is it just a different application of the same medicine (or perhaps faulty reporting)? I mean, when one culture uses something for an abortifacient that another culture uses as a helpful supplemental herb for pregnant mothers, it just doesn't seem to make sense ... 2/11 Sunday Activity: Sitting quietly with area, journaling and reading Time Spent: 1 hr Learning: Read about a plant that in small doses gives you constipation but in large doses is a laxative! 2/13 Tuesday Activity: Weekly group meeting. Time Spent: 2 hrs Learning: No learning persay at this meeting, just did some physical work on the site today and enjoyed spending time with the members of my group and our area. I chopped up fallen limbs with a handsaw and placed them around the trail borders and sidewalk edges while other group members spread bark mulch, raked leaves, and did some pruning. Sadly, found out Amanda, who was in our class at the beginning of Fall quarter, died. 2/14 Wednesday Activity: Weekly group meeting + journal time. Time Spent: 2 hrs Learning: WILL UPDATE AFTER MEETING TOMORROW TOTAL HOURS THIS WEEK: 6 TOTAL HOURS TO DATE: 21
