Syllabus

Expectations
- General
- You are expected to demonstrate
competence in number sense, measurement, algebraic sense, geometric
sense, probability and statistics. You will use your portfolio and
your class presentations as vehicles to present evidence that you
have attained the competencies required.
- You are expected to attend
class regularly and participate in all of the activities presented.
- Portfolio
- Your portfolio will be
divided into 7 sections, one for each section of the 6 sections of the text
and a 7th with your weekly reflections and a final self evaluation. It will
have dividers that will clearly mark the beginning of each section.
(Please put your name and the name of the program clearly on the front
of the portfolio.)
- Your portfolio will contain
the following:
- Weekly reflections
of at least one full printed page, not hand written. (what you
learned, what worked well, what didn't)
- Reading and class
notes
- Worked out homework
problems (in detail with problem statements)
- Complete set of lesson
plans and notes from your group's presentation
- The test questions your group proposed.
- Copies of the evaluations
that your classmates filled out for your presentations.
- Class Presentations: The class
will be divided into presentation teams. Each team will be responsible
for presenting the material in one chapter of the text. The presentation
has the following expectations:
- With your presentation
team you will prepare a series of lessons from a section of the book.
(See lesson plan template.)
- You and your presentation
team are responsible for two sessions. The first introduces the material
(1/3 class period) the second does a follow-up with an assessment
(1/3 class period).

Your team's presentation will use manipulatives.
- Your team will create
an active, interactive lesson.
- Your team will assign
problems to be done by the students for their portfolios.
- Your team will create
and distribute a feedback sheet to be filled out by the students
- Your team will propose
5 questions based on the material you teach for the final exam.
These problems will be turned in electronically for inclusion
in the handouts and the final exam.
- There will be a debriefing
session following each presentation.
- Eight Credit Students
- Four credits ~ 120 hours of
work (4 cr x 3 hr/cr x 10 wks in a standard quarter)
- You are expected to produce
an independent project of your choosing that will strengthen your knowledge
an abilities in particular areas
- Turn in contract by the
beginning of the second week
- Contract needs to have
learning goals and a clear statement of the work you plan to turn
in for credit and how you expect the work to be assessed.
- We will meet during week
6 (evaluation week) to do class presentations.
- You are responsible to
maintain a portfolio detailing your work and demonstrating your learning.
At a minimum, it will include the following.
- Weekly learning log
(To be turned in once a week)
- Number of hours
worked on project
- Reflection on
learning for that week
- Portfolio of your
work
- Copy of the contract
- Copy of weekly
learning logs
- Work you have
done as agreed to in contract
- Bibliography
- Reading and working
notes
- Evaluation:
- You will take a final exam
- You will submit a self evaluation.
- I will write a narrative evaluation
for each of you. It will be based on your portfolio and your participation
in the activities of the program.
- You will write an evaluation
of me.
