Honestly these are the bathroom doors. The higher one led to the old toilet, where waste would drop into a holding 'compartment' with access to the street. Maybe monthly, the poopsmiths would stop by and clean up. Nowadays, the lower door leads to a finished toilet, complete with plumbing!
