Two Years Before The Mast

Working the Waters

Thesis- The Log Two Years Before the Mast, by Richard Henry Dana JR. is more of a romantic perspective than A Voyage Round the World by Haswell because of Dana’s higher education and because he wrote of the life on the boat as a crew member while Haswell wrote of the major navigation and sailing events from the view of an officer and said little about the crew and their lives.

BP1 - Dana’s education gives him the ability to use romantic language as well as his perspective of a crew member and his documentation of the political events on board and his and the crews feelings and opinions.

BP2 - Haswell’s perspective as an officer causes him to be more up front with information and less opinionated and makes him more worried and interested in navigation and sailing and ports than what the crew is up to and the happenings on board.
